University of Museums
As well as its contributions to the educational, social and economic life of Edirne, Trakya University attaches great importance to the historical and cultural structure of the city. Today, Complex of Sultan Bayezid II Health Museum, Lausanne Monument and Museum and Contemporary Painting and Sculpture Museum continue functioning.
Awarded Health Museum (Complex of Sultan Bayezid II)
It is one of the most significant culture and protectionism projects of Trakya University. The museum was established in Medicine Madrasah and Hospital Department of Complex of Sultan Bayezid II by the River Tunca.
The complex, foundation of which was laid in 1484 and
came into service in 1488, was one of the most important health, social, cultural and religious institutions of the period. This historical complex is composed of mosque,
guesthouse, almshouse, turkish bath, mill and bridge in addition to the hospital.
The hospital and the madrasah of the complex play a crucial role in our history. Having been a multidimensional hospital in its foundation, it was then transformed into a center where mental patients were treated. The distinguished feature of the complex is the use of music,
water ripple, fragrance and activities for treatment beside medicine instructions of the era.
Health Museum was founded in 1997 and welcomed a new section, which is the "Medical School” in 2008. Our museum has participated many events and won awards. Trakya University Complex of Sultan Bayezid II Health Museum got its first international success by being awarded the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2004. Europe Museum Award is an award which is organised by European Museum Forum and has been given after the evalution of the nominee museums of the countries which are connected to Europen Convention since 1977. Traditionally, two great awards and one special award are given after the evaluation. Some honourable mention awards have been given time to time.
One of these is the award given by European Council and Trakya University Complex of Sultan Bayezid II Health Museum won this valuable award in 2004.
“Miro sculpture” which has been given as European Museum Award of European Council since 1977 is one of the abstract works of famous sculptor Joan Miro. This symbolic award valued € 26,500 is on display in the museum until it is passed to other museum winning the award following year. Miro was sculptured in 1969. This award received by our museum was announced to the World by Science and Education Committee of European Council in Strasbourg, France.
The museum participated in "The Best in Heritage" event in Dubrovnik, Croatia in 2005 and was chosen the second-best presentation, for which it was accepted to the "Excellence Club".
In 2006, it received the Award of Merit given by the Association of Southeast European Journalists. In 2007, it was promoted in the World Psychiatry Congress held in Osaka, Japan.
The Health Museum was awarded the Best Presentation in the The Best in Heritage-Excellence Club meeting held by European Heritage Association in Cologne, Germany in
2007.
The museum participated in a EU project titled "How Museums, Galleries, Libraries and
Archives Contribute to Lifelong Learning". The project, implemented under the Lifelong Learning Leonardo da Vinci programme, started on September 1st, 2011. 9 partners from 8 countries are involved in the two-year project.
A gradual rise has been observed in the number of the visitors due to the awards, international presentation activities and participation in several publications. Recently, “Complex of Sultan Bayezid II Health Museum” holds the second place attracting visitors following Selimiye Mosque. Special attention is paid by both domestic and foreign tourists due to its uniqueness, interesting design and mystic atmosphere. The visits of Edirne just because of Health Museum clearly reveal the success of the museum.
